I am currently looking at building a small extention myself, i can do most things so thought i would give this ago as well, (watch out for me on 'honey i ruined the house')

i intend to use engineering bricks below the dpc and blockwork above that which wil then be rendered inside and skimmed.

My question is which blocks should i use to please the BCO as i understand that the different blocks all provide different U-Value levels and i would like to use the best i can get.

Its not the blocks, but the wall as a whole you should be thinking of. The wall has to meet the required u-value, so you insulate according to the type of block used.

If rendering then you may be better off with a concrete and not aerated block extenally.

Then you either select a suitable cavity insulation which will determine the cavity width, and you can use a normal conrete or an aerated block internally - and this again will depend on the insulation chosen - so you can use a standard aerated block or a 'super' or wider block with greater insulation properties

Thanks for that woody, i was going to use standard blocks with a 100mm cavity and around 75mm kingspan insulation.

why not use full-fill 100mm dri-therm (fibreglass batts)?
