Hi Guys,

I have noticed that some builds use masonry bricks for the first two or three layers, and then use concrete blocks for the rest of the wall, whereas other builds use concrete blocks from bottom to top. What is the difference between the two techniques ? and when should one be used over the other ?

Where a building is being rendered or clad etc, then the more economical use of blocks is preferred over bricks simply because blocks are cheaper to buy and quicker to lay. Where any part of a rendered building is visible i.e. directly below DPC or any feature details - then bricks will be used.
Similarly, a brick built house may contain a panel of block-work in a location where there may be a lean-to roof etc that will eventually cover that part of elevation later on in the build.

Bricks would only be used in a block wall to alter the coursing and line up the joints with the inner block wall in a cavity wall
