Yep. Chimney stack was removed before we moved in, uncertain as to date - could have been the same time the upper section was rebuilt, but have no evidence to support this.

The flue continues through the height of the bathroom but not it seems into the loft space.

(I may have muddied the waters here wrt to my original questions but I'm learning a lot. Will try to get another pic up tomorrow to see if that makes things clearer)

Dont do anything with the in-situ frame until you have stripped your bathroom and exposed the bearing ends of the inside lintel.
