I'm about to replace a window on a masonry wall. The new window will be a uPVC double glazed one to replace an old timber one (already purchased and delivered so no advice on window specifications / type sought).
The new window will seat in a check reveal and will only take part of the space of the old window, meaning that an addtional frame needs to be installed to fill the gap between the window and the brickwork.
I'm planning to build a timber frame which will fit between brickwork and window, however the devil is in the details....
Below a few questions where I'm hoping to get some advice:
- Would a timber box measured to fit exactly the window be fine (with 1/2mm of extra space to ease the installation)?
- Do I screw the timber box against the brickwork or glue it?
- How do I fill the space between the brickwork and the timber box? (e.g. plaster, foam, other insulation material)
- Do I need to insert insulation between the window frame and the timber box?
- From the outside I plan to seal the window with silicone, is that enough or do I need additional insulation / sealing material?
Bear in mind that the result desired is a sound structure with an 'acceptable' insulation, however as we're talking about an old property I'm not looking for perfection!
