The handle has separated from the spindle. The spindle has rounded (although the handle is square). Is there an adhesive I could use to fix the handle. It's impossible for me to turn the water supply off to renew it at this time.
have a look for any sign of a stop cock in the pavement or in a hole near the front gate.
You can turn a worn spindle with a Mole Wrench or similar (you can get one at a hardware or DIY store. Large stores will have an own-brand which may be cheaper than a genuine Mole. However this will damage the spindle even more.
Look at the old stop-cock carefully and measure the pipes and the large nut. Decide if the old pipes are half-inch copper or are iron pipes. The incoming pipe may be different from the ones inside the house
Very often you can get a similar stop-cock (they have not changed much in a hundred years), and can undo the working parts from the body shell, and screw in the new headworks. This is usually quicker than taking the old one right out. It does depend on turning off the water at the street or gate unless you can cope with quite a flood.
If the pipe inside the house is copper, it may be convenient to leave the old cock in place and put a new one on the copper pipe above it. That way you can turn the old cock off with your mole while working, and back on for ever once the new one is fitted.
You could try phoning your water company to see if they offer a service for replacing or repairing your stop-cock. Some of them do it at subsidised prices as it prevents wastage and leaks.
