Thanks Owain. I would prefer not having a pullcord switch. Is connecting the fan to the lightswitch something that me - a DIY beginner - would be able to do?
There are many ways to wire a fan. If there is an opening window there is no requirement so can be wired any way you want. With a window that does not open it needs to work without the lights but nothing to stop it being wired so lights work it too. With no window you can have it solely working from lights. If a fan is required under building regulations it also requires a run on feature.
They can be wired from a socket supply with a fused connection unit (FCU) or from lighting supply I would always fit an isolator as if it goes wrong you want to be able to switch it off and still have lights. Likely the pneumatic push button is the simplest way to start the fan.
I have seen many fans which do not comply with regulations, in fact very common as soon as inspected the fan is turned off never to run again. You also get where windows have been changed from opening to non opening type. Really as soon as passed no one seems to care if it complies or not.
As to if you can alter wiring to suit I have been brought up in an engineering family so I can't think of anyone in my family who could not wire one up. But that does not mean every one can.
