Why is my hot water brown - its been like this for 2 days, cold water is fine :?: :?

Probably the coil is holed in the cylinder allowing the dirty heating water to mix withe the nice clean hot water

either that or the last plumber popped some teabags in the cylinder to ensure he got a cuppa on the next visit

Steve131 - going with the faulty cylinder possibility, and assuming that you have a feed and expansion cistern, have you checked to see if it's overflowing (either by looking at the warning pipe or by getting into the loft)?

If it isn't, then what are the relative heights of the F&E cistern and cold storage cistern? I ask because it's possible for the water to mix but for neither cistern level to rise if the water levels are the same (or nearly the same).

Another thought - have you checked on the condition of stored cold water? You said that the cold water isn't brown, but is this the mains or the tank water or both?

Hi Steve,

I am having the same problem as yours, only that i am getting black water from hot water taps. The cold water is very clean as it comes directly from mains, however the hot water, I think, gets accumulated in tank. The tank then somehow heats the water up and it seems something has gone wrong with tank. I have got Glow warm combination boiler, but heating and heating of water are working fine.

Please somebody help!!! Do I need to call plumber, where can I get reasonable and decent plumber. Any suggestions highly appreciated.

Amit - you should start a new topic with your post, otherwise you're hijacking this one (which I did earlier  ).

hi,
just checked in the loft and whilst it doesn't look like its overflowing(about 4 inch from top), but there is water all over the boards around the tank and is running down below where the cistern is,also when the heating is on there is the same brown coloured water (hot) running from a pipe into the f & e tank

Er, you appear to have either a leak or some rather forceful overpumping. What speed setting is the pump on?

Meanwhile, did you identify the cause of the water being where it shouldn't be?

Also, could you confirm that the heating vent isn't capable of discharging into the cold storage (domestic) cistern?

Also, what are the relative heights of the F&E cistern and cold storage cistern?

Further to softus' reply

Check that overflow from F & E tank does not run into cold water storage tank. That's what some clever person had done to save a few feet of overflow pipe and a couple of fittings in my previous house.

An excellent point - so much so that I'm clubbing myself around the temples with my 18" adjustables for forgetting it . Ouch, ouch, ouch, etc...
