hello and thanks to all that relpy,
a couple of telecom questions :

what cable do i need to extend the cable from where the master socket is, to were i want to move it to?and how do i join the cable?

what cable do i need to run an extension from the newly positioned master socket to a extension socket?

2 pair/4 pair isn't making much sense at the mo!

excellent, thanks for the top advice. i was waiting for the 'you shouldn't interfere with bt side of the cable' replies, so thanks for the straight forward info!!

It's OK if you have a linebox. If not, you know you shouldn't really do it already.

whats a line box?

at the moment there is just a bare cable (labourer smashed the socket when removing plaster!!) in a stupid position. so i just want to extend it to a more convienient location.

Report the labourer to BT then - its their property and they'll come and fit you a new socket, and probably charge the labourer. Though they'd probably just charge you, knowing BT.

If you have not got a Bt linebox on the end of your dropwire you will have some explaining to do if or when you need an engineer to visit for a fault.Ok you can buy a box that looks like a BT box and everything will work if wired up ok,but problems start when you have to call them out and the engineer sees non standard sockets and wire on BT's side of the installation. It's your choice but you do not sound very competant to be messing about extending wiring etc.Get the job done right .

why move the master in the first place, assuming its a NTE5 style (2 part) just take your extention wiring from the customer side terminals and leave the master where it is.

If you must move the master yourself use BT spec cable (CW1308 for indoor CW1308B for outdoor) and try to avoid having any junctions in the cable before the master that don't have a BT or GPO logo on.
