Bt master phone socket

Hi all apologies if this is a stupid question but why is it illegal to touch/move a master bt phone socket? is it purely because it doesn't belong to you, or is it like with telewest/virgin media that any diy modifications you make can cause problems on the network affecting other people?

Both reasons, not actually illegal but it is a breach of the terms of the contract with BT.

Thanks i will leave it be in that case i wouldn't want to inadvertently cause problems for others, i take it the kind of problems i could potentially cause are broadband speed reduction or a noisy phone line?
