if your only doing a couple of points the plastic tools should be ok. consider them disposable though and don't moan when they break after a few points.

if your doing more than that then get the proper tool.

most extention sockets sold now to diyers have screw terminals but if you are doing terminations to the NTE5 bottom plate or to existing extention wiring you are likely to have to work with the IDC system.

Never had a problem with constant ringing caused by reversed 2 & 5. I get a working line either way round. Broadband modems don't like reversed 2 & 5, though. I have a plug-in tester that shows which way round things are - often I find that although blue/white goes to 2 and white/blue to 5, because the dropwire is reversed, you get a red light on the tester instead of green.

According to my experience, the only way to get a constant ring is if you break the 2 or 5...

iirc you can get constant ringing if you reverse 2 and 5 between two extentions (with pin 3 connected) but not if you reverse before the master socket.
