Has anyone got any experience of these budget OBD readers that are often advertised in mags such as CAR MECHANICS etc etc, I have been pondering over getting one, but as they differ so much in price, i dont want to buy a naff one, nor do i want to fork out loads of pennies on somthing that isnt used regularly, But are handy to have in the event of a problem, I had a fault coder reader for my older Escort XR3i EFI, that was simply a flashing LED, and that proved very handy. But with these more modern cars and diagnostic tools, its a different ball game

there are some orange coloured ones on e bay, the name escapes me but ive used one on a few cars and its done the job well, ive also bought a gendan one,a bit more expensive but worth every penny

I have this one http://www.gendan.co.uk/product_STN327.html which plugs into my laptop. I have had to email gendan on a couple of occasions to re-enable my software after I bought a new laptop and have always had quick response.
The only thing I will mention - they one I have doesn't reset service indicators, but reads and resets my 2001 mondeo fault codes and MIL light no problems (my mondeo doesn't have a service indicator anyway!)
If you have any questions regarding the compatability of their products send them an email - they respond pretty quickly.

I just bought an ELM 327 from ebay.HK. My mate tried it on a modern car eobd/obdII and said it was the biz, but the problem I have at the moment is getting the software to read the older OBD data on a Daewoo Matiz. I had no problem getting the 16x12 pin adaptor plug for it but the scantool.net software that came with the ELM unit wont work with OBD.

If you don't want a one where you need a laptop etc and just want to obtain any error codes, I got one from Talk to My Car (google the name for their site). Very helpful and excellent service. Mine just plugs in and gives any codes... I was told might not work on brand new stuff (they have newer model fro that) but works on the girlfriends 2006 Tigra OK. Was only about £50 iirc too.

HTH
