Building a detached garage.

Hi,

I'm looking to build a detached garage and want to know how close I can build it to my house. I can't see any restriction under PD, but my architect thinks it has to be 5m from the house and the local planning officer thinks it has to be 6m away. Does anyone know for sure and can you point to to the legislation?

I was under the impression that it simply needed to not be attached to be classed as an outbuildings. There's nothing on the .gov website

Correct; there is no minimum distance from the house.

Before 2008, the minimum distance was 5m, so your architect is a bit out of date.

Similarly, don't know where the planning officer gets 6m from? Makes you wonder what they are getting paid for - dishing out rubbish information. If you need advice on planning matters, don't ask a planning officer!
