Hello,

My driveway is completely open at the moment and I need to put up a gate for security/privacy reasons.

The driveway is 3.4 metres wide and the gate shall have to be 2 metres tall to match my neighbour's fence.

My plan is to build a frame (two gate posts and a cross-member) out of something like this:

https://www.amazon.co.uk/50x50x2350...UTF8&qid=1463648010&sr=8-2&keywords=gate+post

and then attach two rectangular squares inside with hinges (made from the same material) as gate frames.

I was then going to cover the gate frames with wood.

The above is completely theoretical - is it a workable idea?

In particular, is 50mmx50mm a decent material (i.e. strong and resilient enough) for a project like this?

Any pointers/modifications would be much appreciated.

Any takers on this?

I never got round to trying it and was hoping to do so before the end of the summer.

you would waste a lot
you would need around 5-7 for each gate 2x rails/2 styles /1 diagonal so £250-350 just for the metal without wood or fitments

That is a good point, actually.

Would it be that much cheaper/practical just to stick with doing the entire thing in wood?
