I am going to build a simple stand to house sky and BT boxes with a tv to sit on top. I would use pine from a local B&Q but would like som advice on creating the white finish. I could of course use gloss paint, either oil or water based but want some advice on using either a white dye, or a white stain. I don't really understand the difference or how to create a gloss/satin type finish. Any help would be appreciated.

I wouldn't use pine.

You could (obviously) use contiboard in white. Basically chipboard covered inn a plastic.

If you used MDF you could seal the finished item and use filler, sand down, then spray (an acquired art) or brush/roll a satin paint after using something like zinnser as an undercoat.
Loads of thin coats and sand between them.

Or go to Ikea
