built in programer - replace with stand alone?

I am pretty sure that the programmer has gone (again) on my powermax 155x.

To avoid this in future, i thought it must be possible to use a different clock? Surely its just a case of wiring a different clock to the boiler?

Excuse my inexperience, but is it possible to do this?
