The judge in this case lifted some of the reporting restrictions today. It was enough for us to find out why he was recalled to prison!

Bulger killer Venables on child porn charges

Jon Venables, one of the killers of toddler James Bulger, has been charged with downloading and distributing child pornography.

Venables is accused of downloading onto his computer 57 indecent photographs of youngsters between February, last year and February this year.

He is also charged with distributing seven indecent images of children between February 1 and 23 this year.

Venables and Robert Thompson were jailed for life for the 1993 murder of two-year-old James, who was led away from a shopping centre in Liverpool by the then ten-year-olds.

They were jailed for life but released on licence in 2001.

Venables was recalled to prison in February following the new allegations. But the criminal charges could not be reported until Monday when a judge at the Old Bailey lifted some reporting restrictions.

No doubt, some Guardian readers will now spring to his defence, demanding that he should be freed with immediate effect. Christians will be urged to pray for him. No doubt, the prison service will be blamed for his apparent failure to be rehabilitated.
Hang him up by his nether regions.

Thank you Karinska.

Now then, enough of me.... back to this scum bag!

It's a difficult thing - dealing with our hatred for the sickening acts carried out by mentally ill people.

'Mentally ill'... are you referring to Venables (or whatever his name is these day! )
Yes. He is clearly one sick mother-effer who is entirely incapable of recognising what is acceptable. On the one hand, you can't help but want to repeatedly punch him in the testies until he vomits blood. On the other hand, you know you "shouldn't" feel like this.

So for any crime now, we could use the excuse that someone is mentally ill. Does this make it right then? I don't think so.
Perhaps he could benefit from some electric shock therapy (in a steel chair with high tension cables going to it.)
I for one would gladly turn the switch on.

It's not an excuse by any stretch of the imagination. The bloke is (and clearly always has been) sick in the head, as in abnormal, mentally ill. As such, he should never have been released in the first place, and the outrage that he was allowed to walk the streets like the rest of us has been proven as totally justified.

Hmmm, that's an interesting view.

What constitutes 'mentally ill' though. I mean if he's mentally ill then he'll be sent to a cozy little hospital and looked after (oops, I mean punished), there for the rest of his days. Mind you, I'd be surprised if he spends more than a year or two before he's re-released because he's found god, or he's rehabilitated, or his supporters have successfully lobbied for his release based on the fact that he grew up on a council estate, or.......

For me there's too much talk of 'mentally ill'. He's evil I'll grant you that but is evil mentally ill? I'm inclined to think not.

I can't help but think that you seem to be thinking that I'm making excuses for him by using the term "mentally ill". Nothing could be further from the truth. His complete and utter ability to empathise makes him criminally and morally insane. As such I, like most people on here, want to cause him much pain and repeatedly hospitalise him through brutalilty.

On the other hand, such raw emotions aren't good for one's "soul".

I don't think you're 'making excuses' for him at all JM. I think we can all see from your responses so far that you're far from trying to excuse him. My concern is with this term of 'mentally ill'. Mental illness seems to have grown in popularity! Everyone from celebrities to criminals have some form of mental illness these days! The term is thrown around in court rooms up and down the country and it seems to be the golden ticket in terms of providing evil people with nothing short of a very comfortable life.
