Hello,

Yesterday, I left work in my BMW 318 CI SE, and had 4 passengers (dont ask how they all fitted)

5 mins in to the drive, and I could smell a burning smell, almost like plastic. Well, I got to the cinema, watched with film and drove home by myself, and the smell was still there, but not as bad.

Then today, just as i left my girlfriends house, the burning smell came thorugh the airvents.

Any ideas what this might be??

Take a look under your car, the exhaust may have picked up a plastic bag or something which could be melting.

have a good look under the bonnet for any signs of loose wiring looms that may have come into contact with exhaust manifolds etc..

|Ok, took it to a local garage, and put it on a ramp.

No bag

No leaks visible from below or above

No brake calipers sticking, or hand brake cables.

The smell is evident after every startup, esp a cold start ie overnight.

Garage reackons that leaves an electrical fault, so bmw garage it is! I would get an autoelectrician out, but if i pay for this, and this isnt the problem, I will be worse off had I just gone to bmw direct!

Cheers.
