hi i'm looking to buy a second hand gas fire, i'm a little concerned whether my existing flue will be suitable for this more modern fire.my existing flue is a class 2 precast, the fire i'm looking to buy is a valor 639 which is currently been used with a class 1 flue, do all gas fires have to be used with a certain flue type or are they universal? thanks

It would usually be the correct advice for you to ask your chosen gas reg engineer who is going to fit it for you.

Make sure that if you buy a used gas fire that you get the correct installation manual for it.

Or that your installer says that he can access the instructions for it.

No installer should fit a second hand gas appliance unless he has the installation instructions for it.

Or were you going to fit it yourself as a DIY job?

Tony

sort of DIY job , but with someone who is pretty good, but not registered, the same person who sorted our kitchen out a couple of years ago and I trust him

I don't think its Jesus, but someone who dabbles with DIY gas work!

Highly dangerous in my opinion!

And blo0dy stooopid.

But as long a the OP trusts him then that's obivoulsy fine.

Trust is far more important than competence and the correct equipment. After all how important is a flue?

Darwin's theory might kick in somewhere along the lines, shame about the rest of the family, and of course the insurance company will laugh their asses off.

so why did you ask if it was going to be a diy job? it seems that you only wanted to 'have a go' I came asking for advice not for people to have a rant,i am not so stupid as to get a diy er in to have a 'go' at fitting a gas appliance, but someone who has 30 years experience and has all the equipment just not corgi registered,

What has CORGI registration got to do with it?

Why are you asking on here about flues?

It is blo0dy stupid whether you like it or not.

And ILLEGAL.

We asked if it was DIY because we see prannets like you posting all the time asking questions they shouldn't be asking about work they shouldn't be doing.

Or in your case are stupid enough to KNOWINGLY get an unregistered installer to do the work.

What happens if something goes wrong? What come back are you going to have?

What concerns us more than your safety is the fact that you may have dependents in the property who are oblivious to your lack of consideration of their welfare over the tightness of your wallet.

A second hand gas fire is bad enough.... but ....

but Dan the guy sorted their kitchen out, so surely that makes him an expert on fitting gas fires doesn't it

How could I be so stupid not to realise that.

Kitchen fitters never screw up a gas installation do they?

I have never, ever, ever, ever been to a kitchen in my life that has had anything but master fitters doing a superlative job of complying with gas regs/clearance requirements/ventilation and other niceties of such work.

I will now go and slam my own head in the garage door as punishment for my own short sightedness.

i am not so stupid as to get a diy er in to have a 'go' at fitting a gas appliance, but someone who has 30 years experience and has all the equipment just not corgi registered,

But if he cannot be bothered to do the assessments ( £900 ) and pay the registration fees ( £200 ) then its unlikely that he will be bothering to pay for public liability insurance either!

In a few days [16th May] it will be the 45th anniversary of the day that a certain Mrs Ivy Hodge paid the price for getting her trusted DIY man to fit her gas cooker.

The Ronan Point disaster inquiry eventually led to the formation of CORGI and the gas regulation we have today as well as a big shake up in building regulations

The most appropriate variant of a quote from George Santayana :-

Those who fail to learn from the mistakes of their predecessors are destined to repeat them.
