buying and fitting a combi boiler

So, if we remove the husband and wife scenario, and say, I fix a cleaner's hoover for her as a favour (which would have cost her, say £25 for me to do so), and she does what would cost me £25 of cleaning for me as a favour, then this is a taxable exchange?

So the IR will want a cut in any goodwill gestures?
Apparently.

So if I installed a bathroom as a charitable gesture for, say, a church's youth club, and God did me a favour in return, then both I and God would need to declare this in our tax return :?
Of course not. Religious organisations are tax exempt, and god does not have a national insurance number, nor does he oblige requests from tax inspectors. And to keep up the image of impartiality, he doesn't grant favours to English tax payers either, judging by the way Brown and his Darling keep on living.

"Give unto Caesar that which is Caesar's..." refers to tax, but Jesus adds
"and unto God that which is God's" which includes favours and goodwill gestures. Thus, it would seem that the IR, like God, are omniscient and omnipotent.

IR no doubt would like to believe they are omnipotent.
But if they would be any good at their job, they would be working in the private sector, earning per week what they now get per month.
Omniscient? More like a contradiction in terms.

But if they would be any good at their job, they would be working in the private sector, earning per week what they now get per month.
And thus it follows that if they moved to the private sector under their current competence, it would mean they would earn per month what they now get per week

Thus, it would seem that the IR, like God, are omniscient and omnipotent.

And it came to pass that the IR decended into the house and all those who dwell there and took unto themselves all that they possessed including every last lamb.

And God said unto those that dwelled there, be thankful for my small mercies. Thou hast lost all thy chattels and possessions to the IR but I have delayed thy building society out of the goodness of my heart but have no fear they will come forth next week with their bailiffs to seize thy house.

After next week, I will not forsake thee so I have reserved space in the stable for you to dwell with the animals.

The good news of course is that house repo's are increasing less quickly than expected. This is not so much due to government rescue measures (8, yes, eight, repo's avoided at last count), as to the banks finding out that realised prices at auctions are so low that they don't clear the principal sum, let alone interest and costs.
Wild guess puts average distress sale at between 70 and 80% of total required amount.
Bit like a bankrobber threatening to shoot himself if you don't hand over the money.

But heaven forbid any friend who helps you move your waning possessions, for they too will fall under our all-seeing eye and have to issue monies unto us for this charitable act.

PS - the stable in question is a gift, which is subject to capital gains tax :!:

The good news of course is that house repo's are increasing less quickly than expected.

This reminds me of the tories back in the early 80's when they exclaimed the good news that things were getting much better as "the rate of increase in unemployment had fallen"

Great news indeed when things are getting worse, but not so quickly

I would consider it great news if my hairline was still receding, but at one third of the speed. :( If it goes any faster than it is going currently, I will get a speeding ticket whilst standing still.

You can buy things for this condition!

Apologies for responding a little late but I thought I like to say that I have now bought the boiler and it is now sitting in my front room its a Vaillant EcoTec Plus 824 boiler. I hope I have made the right choice but it was in a sale for £415 boxed. I was going to buy a glowworm boiler but someone has said that these are just Vaillant boilers under a "badged" a bit like washing machines, is that right, would I have been better just buying a glowworm for less or was I right to buy the Vaillant?
