Bye Bye Gary

No he didn't.
He apologised for causing any offence.
He stated that he would never tweet anything antiSemitic.

The two sentences are seperate.
Saying you would never do something that you have just done. yeah that helps.

He didn't admit that he had been antiSemitic.
He apologised for causing offence to anyone.
You're reading lots of things into what is not there.

He said on a video on his social media: "Hi everyone, some personal news. Last week I shared a post here on Instagram that contained an emoji that has awful connotations. Unfortunately I did not see the emoji. If I had, I would never, ever have shared it.

"The minute I was made aware I quickly deleted the post and went on to make an apology. I would like, once again, to say I am sorry unreservedly for the hurt and upset caused, it was a genuine mistake and oversight and I should've been more diligent, I know that.

"I've stood up for minorities, humanitarian issues and against all forms of racism all of my life, including of course antisemitism, which I absolutely abhor. There's no place for it. I think it is best for all concerned that I step down from BBC duties all together and not do next season's FA Cup or World Cup. This weekend's Match of the Day will be my last show. It has been a pleasure and a huge privilege to work with the BBC for 30 years.

"The relationship with the BBC has been long and wonderful but it is the right time for the organisation and myself to go our separate ways. Thank you also to all of you for your incredible love and support for so many years, I'll see you all on Sunday."

I don't, because we are not discussing whether that post was antiSemitic or not.
I know that is what you want to swivel to.
But we're discussing gary's statement, his actions, and whether antiZionism is antiSemitic per se.

No, you've deflected the conversation around to that, to disguise your own hatred.

As I said, he apologised, stated that he would never post anything antiSemitic, and he's moved on.

That doesn't not mean that antiZonism is antiSemitic per se.
If the post was not antiSemitic, and the usual lobby who cry antiSemtisim at every opportunity persuaded Gary to see his post as antiSemitic, that's up to them.
Gary is probably not an expert on antiSemtism, and decided to paky it safe, rather than risk creating a huge furore.

Only that lobby who cry antiSemtism at every opportunity are insisting on creating that furore and trying to argue that antiZionism is antiSemtic per se. It isn't.

The Committee report presented by mbk confirms that. It is only antiSemitic if it is used in abusing Jews.
If Gary did not see the emoji, or did not appreciate the significance of it, he wouldn't have realised that it could have been interpreted as antiSemitic. When he did realise, he apologised and has moved on.

But it till does not men that antiZonism is antiSemitic per se, as you and mbk claim.
He shared a post comparing them (Jews) to rats.

Hopefully those on this forum wont need reminding. No amount of pretending that Zionism is a political ideology will protect them

I've just had a look at it. Had to join Instagram! The content of the video Lineker shared is uncontroversial. Just a Palestinian lawyer explaining in a debate what she means by Zionism. It is the rat emoji in the title that has caused all the controversy. Am I allowed to post a snapshot without being antisemitic?

What did Lineker actually write in his post. Or did he just share the video without comment.

For the best if you don't.

So all this fuss is about a rat emoji

This is an example of blatant weaponisation of anti semitism

It runs a little deeper than that Notch. It was widely used by the Nazis to de-humanize Jews and compare them to Vermin. Lineker obviously wasn't aware of that and when he was made aware, de deleted it and apologised. By then, the damage was done.
If the pro palestine link had just been the usual anti zionist tropes, that would have been acceptable, but an image used to portray Jews as vermin was a step too far,

Animal emojis once weaponized by Nazi propaganda are resurging in today’s antisemitic online rhetoric. Our latest analysis reveals explosive growth in rat, pig, snake and octopus emojis used to dehumanize Jews across mainstream platforms.

This week, former soccer player and BBC pundit Gary Lineker faced intense backlash after sharing an anti-Zionist video that featured a rat emoji —a symbol notoriously used in Nazi-era antisemitic propaganda and still associated with antisemitic messaging today. The post was widely condemned on social media, with critics accusing Lineker of amplifying dehumanizing tropes.

Among those speaking out was X user Josh Howie, who wrote, “Jews have been calling out Gary Lineker for a long time now. And all the while the @BBC did nothing. Now he’s comparing us to rats. It’s almost as if after thousands of years of this sh*t we know what Jew-hate looks like.” The BBC came under pressure to respond, with many calling for disciplinary action. Lineker later issued an apology, stating that he had not recognized the symbol’s antisemitic connotations and adding, “I would never knowingly share anything antisemitic. It goes against everything I believe in.”
