I understand that today’s C.U.s are enclosed and are therefore ok to mount on untreated wooden surfaces, but if you decide to bring the cables in from the back and cut out holes through the C.U. and wooden backing board, does this contravene any regs, such as 422-01-02?

Cheers

not everyone sits with a copy of the regs next to their machine..

care to quote the reg you just listed?

My apologies.

422-01-02: Where fixed electrical equipment is installed having, in normal operation, a surface temperature sufficient to cause a risk of fire or harmful effects to adjacent materials, one or more of the following installation methods shall be adopted:

(i) mounting on a support or within an enclosure which shall withstand, without risk of fire or harmful effect, such temperatures as may be generated. The support shall have a low thermal conductance

(ii) screening by material which can withstand without risk of fire or harmful effect the heat emitted by the electrical equipment

(iii) mounting so as to allow safe dissipation of heat and at a sufficient distance from adjacent material.

that reg is mainly the reason for puting fire hoods on recessed downlighters.. or other such things..

as stated cu's shouldn't be hot in normal use..

however there might be an entry in the regs or somewhere in the DNO's rules that says it must be fitted on an non combustible surface..
