1. Is it possible to use standard halogen downlights in a kitchen cabinet or do they have to be proper cabinet lights?

2. I have a socket spur on top of a wall cabinet which I was going to use to power cabinet lights. How can I wire from that so I can swicth the lights on at a more convenient location, such as under the cabinet?

1) depends on fitting (they do get hot)

2) put another switch in series with new lights to your conveiniance

i would think a normal (ceiling) halogen is better since the heat dissipation is better, the heat isnt staying in the cupboard.
