Hi

I’m installing a low wattage LED floodlight outside. I’m taking a spur from the upstairs lighting circuit at a junction box which the previous owners added to supply another outside light.

I’m using 1.5mm hi-tuff black flex which will pass through the gable end wall and be clipped to the outside before going into a weatherproof junction box. Can this enter the junction box at the top via a cable gland, or would it be better to enter from the bottom to reduce any chance of water ingress - would rain just run down the cable and pass through the gland into the JB?

From a purely aesthetic look, it would be better if top entry, then I can add the pre-wired light flex Into the bottom via another gland.

Thanks.

Before dismissing the placement of a gland to the top of a box there are a few things to consider. If the cabe looks pleasing to the eye and makes the install look better then yes you can place the gland on top entry. To make it water tight then just use the correct size comp gland to begin with ensuring it is a tight fit around the cable, other two things you can do to prevent water ingress would be to fill the box with something like Wiska gel and possibly install a shroud over the gland similar to an SWA gland. If the install would look neater then this is the way I would go with it. I do lots of them and not had a problem yet.
