Dose anybody know what wire size this is (house was built in 1960's and has never been rewired) its down as 2.5mm2 on the EICR)

Its almost certainly 7.029 - dating back to the early 1970's or before - so 2.5mm would be the modern size
Most EICR software (if not all) only list metric sizes so people select the closest
