I've bought a house with a very large rear garden that has lane access for residents to park on their properties.

I'm building 2 garages using dense blocks the first is (external measurements) 3m wide by 5m long with a flat roof height of 2.5m.

The second is 4m wide by 5m long with a flat roof height of 2.5m.

I'm using box usb boarding with box profile steel sheets on top to make waterproof. The beams will sit on piers and padstones. The seated length is going to be 110mm.

How do i calculate what size/dimensions steel i beams I need to properly support the spans?

Work out the live and dead loads, add the safety factors

Work out the UDL

Work out the reactions at the bearings

Select a trial section

Check the bending, shear, buckling, deflection and rotation moments are permissible for the trial section

Adopt the trial section if suitable

Work out the bearing stresses for wall

Work out the load capacity for the wall and crushing reaction

Calculate a suitable method of supporting the bearing load

Et voilà
