We are planning on converting our garage into a master suite. The garage currently has a concrete slab that has a large crack/split. The rest of the house is pier and beam. We'd like to create a raised floor in the garage so that its at the same level as the rest of the house. Do we need to break up the concrete slab or is there a way to build a floor on top of it?

In short - yes, you can do what you propose but there are far too many other variables to explain on a DIY website such as this.
Why not call in a general contractor for a site visit heads up?

You can put the new for on top of the concrete, or span a timber floor across and hung of the walls
