CAN ANYONE IDENTIFY THIS??

I've been sent on a job in a United Utilities small pumping station to fit a toilet, sink & water heater.

While I was putting the copper runs in I wanted to change the ISO vavle because it was just coated in paint and I thought that would be alot easier than cleaning it up.

So I followed the pipe back till I got to a stoptap in the main pumping room, and I turned it clockwise, it was that seized up that the handle snapped out before the gate valve closed, then water spewed out from were the handle goes.

I jammed the handle in to stop the water coming out, and tomorrow I plan to replace the stop tap.

The stoptap I want to replace is the one on the cold feed to toilet, taps etc... (the labelled one)

To replace the stoptap I want to turn off the underfloor stoptap, but that is feeding a big gray box in the top corner of the room, and I don't know what will happen if I cut it's water supply off as I don't know what it is.

Can anyone identify it? I was thinking it may be air conditioning but it has big industrial 54mm (I think 54mm) steel pipe coming out of it, so I want to be sure first.

:?: :?: :?:

This must be a wind-up. Surely the big grey box is a cistern of some sort with a 54mm outet.

Ask the guy in charge of the pumping station.

I've been sub-contracted and haven't spoke with anyone from UU, the pumping station is always empty, workers turn up the odd time to check on things but seen no sight of them, and want to just get it done with least amount of hassle of bringing someone out to look at it.

It may well be, it's just the gray pipe goes through the wall and into a locked room, so I can't see what it is connected to, and there is no overflow on the gray box so not sure....

if its full up for what time it will take you to change the valve i wouldn't worry.

Do you think it's a cistern? There isn't really anyway for me to check because it is so high up, higher than my ladder goes, don't want to interupt anything at the station

i would say so.
on your pic the cold feed on the tank is low is that how low it is ? or is it at the top ?

still a cistern.

can't be much else. just turn it off and change the valve.
if you bugger the outside one then i would worry.
