Can I buy and fit an LPG tank myself?

I am considering buying a house that has 4 Calor tanks that supply the heating/water. Can you tell me whether it is possible to purchase a tank to be fitted either above or below ground, have someone run the pipework to the existing connection, and then get it checked out before turning it on? Or, does it all have to be done by a supplier? If the tank is owned by and rented to me, how does that affect any change of supplier if I can find someone to supply cheaper LPG?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

The LPG supplier fits and owns the tank but you can change supplier who will take over the existing tank as well.

Subject to contract terms as there may be a minimum period before you can switch (every two years normally).

Oh, that's not what I was hoping to hear! Not that specialised to dig a hole and put a tank in, and would save a lot of money!

you aren't allowed to own bulk gas tanks in the UK. They have to be inspected regularly and replaced every 20ish years and are the responsibility of the gas supplier. This is for both your safety and more importantly the safety of others around you.

Was just trying to find a way to keep the cost down if we were to decide to buy the place - rather than have supplier quote to dig and put in tank and connect, we have the equipment to dig the hole, thus removing quite some time from their quote - that was all. Not to worry, thanks for your comments.

Am I right in thinking you haven`t had a quote yet? If so how much for was it?

No, not had a quote, alhtough I now know from above that we cannot buy and install a tank ourselves, it has to be a supplier. It is quite a big factor in whether to decide to put in an offer on an house that already has lpg supplied by cylinders rather than a tank (either above or below ground). If anyone has any idea on how much it does cost, then I'd be interested to know.
Thanks
Sue

the tank has to be visible and accessible from the main road, you cant just fit them anywhere , bottle siting is a lot more flexible than tank siting

Afraid you are giving incorrect advise.
