Hi,
I paid quite a bit for a firm to install a new gas fire and cap the chimney. Never really had cause to look closely but we've now seen that the back of the capping by our stone wall is just a load of gaffer tape covering a big gap, and the tape is naturally now coming away from the rough stone and dangling down exposing the gap. Is this work as crap as I think it is?

It's usually a rule of thumb with many tradesman if you can't see the work then expect it to be bodged. Roofers are notorious for this.

Gas fire ?

That looks like an ally sheet ? At the back of a gas fire ??

Closure plate ? Fitted with closure plate tape ? Which looks like duct tape but is not ?

Dunno pics are not clear ?

Can't see any spray adhesive also tape not really wide enough for the job, so yeah a bad bodge.

It's a gas fire, here's a wider shot, the top back corners are the bits with the gaffer tape hanging off. There is a large silver style flexible tube going from the fire to the top of the chimney, re ally sheet not sure, this board type thing goes across but it's the crap gaffer tape at the back that's suggesting this is a wider bad job.

If the gas fire has a flue from the stove to the top of chimney then I would say that satisfies the requirements for the stove and gas regulations.

However, the chimney itself needs ventilating so making it air tight at the bottom and top should not be done.

thanks for that reply, useful, just a bit surprised there's gaffer tape hanging off the back...
