Can I sand this down for painting?

Hi,

Having stripped off a load of wallpaper I'm left with bare plaster which is covered in what I assume are bits of old PVA. Couple of pics attached. I want to paint the walls and wondering if sanding this off will work, or if I will need to reskim? I guess the other option is backing paper but I've never used it and not sure if it can really give a clean finish without seeing the joins in the paper.

I’d sand the loose bits off and then use lining paper and paint that. Shouldn’t see any joins if you do it properly. If there’s a noticeable gap between strips, you can always fill and sand the joints. I have it all over my house.

Thanks Mottie, good to know as it seems a lot less hassle (and cost) to paper it. Will give it a go.

Give it a sand and see, looks like lots of loose bits that will easily come off.

I recently used lining paper and regret it. Wish I'd paid extra for a skim. Reason being seems are noticeable and in some places lifting after painting
