I am sinking boxes for wall light switches and was wondering, instead of the dreaded hammer and bolster, could I use box sinker with a standard (non-sds) rotary hammer drill or does it have to be stationary when being chiseled in, hence the "chisel only" option on the sds drill?

Chisel only - and it needs to be a big drill.

Use your existing drill to make a series of holes just slightly deeper than you want to sink the box. Go around the outline and fill in the centre. Then chop out. Much neater and easier than just hacking at it with a bolster.
