the thing is leaking very slightly. also I'm getting my heating but no hot water
I helped the motorised valve to open by moving the level and I then got hot water
it is on a timer bit ive noticed the water has gone off.....is it because the temperature has been reached ? but the light shouldn't go off should it?.the boiler is a worester and only 2 years old
i'll be gratefull for any help

Unless its dripping onto the valve ?

thanks guys
no its not dripping on to the valve stem......the hot water works ( I think) now, when i put the the hot water on the control panel to continuous
does not seem to light up or work when i put it on Auto......motorised valve is knacknered i think......is there a way of testing it and more importantly which valve is for the heating ( which is working) and which for the water?

If you have more than one motorised valve, you will have what is known as an 'S Plan'. The pipe on which the valve is located will help you identify it. if it is located on the pipe feeding the hot water cylinder it is for the hot water. If it is on the pipe feeding the radiators, it is for the central heating. Here's a simple schematic diagram.

It's quite easy to test. When the valve doesn't open and you think that it should be open, with a multimeter check for 230v across the Live and Neutral wires going to the motorised valve. If there is voltage there and the valve isn't open, then it's faulty.

As a note of caution, you may think the valve isn't open, but it may be open, but not operating the boiler via its internal switch which could give the same symptoms. When the valve is open, sliding the manual lever will meet little or no resistance. If there is resistance and a whrring sound when you move it, the valve isn't open.

I have no idea what 'light' you are referring to. Most central systems have several. Can you be more specific?

the light on the control panel to control the heating and hot water timings stem

Sorry I'm still not clear. Do you mean an indicator that lights up when the timer is selected to be 'on'? If so, that's odd there are usually two lights, one for hot water and one for heating, I've never seen a shared one, what make / model is the programmer?

if I set the hot water clock on the panel to auto so if comes on at a certain time ,the time comes and goes without the hotwater light coming on and I presume no water being heated , however if I set the control to continuous on the panel the light comes on and I get hotwater heated ( that's if the valve is open I presume?

when I turn the water off I do hear a whirling sound too

Honeywell doesn't help that much, They have made a few different versions over the years, but I think you are referring to the indicator light that comes on when the programmer is selected to hot water on.

From what you say then, it looks as if either the programmer isn't working or you are not setting it properly. This too can be tested with a multimeter either at the motorised valve, first making sure that the cylinder thermostat is calling for heat, or at the thermostat. If you are able to use a multimeter safely, check for 230v. If it's not there then the programmer isn't supplying it.

Thanks for the picture, it appeared whilst I was typing the last post. It's a Honeywell ST9400C and will have two lights one for heating and one for hot water. So I guess we are talking about the hot water 'on' light so, what I said above is OK.

If you hear whirring when you turn off the hot water, then the valve was previously open. The electric motor opens the valve and holds it open. Then, when the power is removed a spring pulls the mechanism back to the closed position and that's the noise you hear.
