Can This Hedge Be Saved?

Hi All,

My Neighbour had a hedge that was approximately just over 2 meters in height. He had it chopped in half last August. Since then it has not quite recovered, see pictures taken last week.

He is now think about removing it and I would rather him keep it as it adds a bit of greenery and looks better than a brick wall.

Any advise if this hedge can be saved would be really appreciated.

is it Leylandii? Or something similar. If you cut back beyond the growing point they will not recover. Horrible things anyway. I'd get rid of it and plant beech which will retain leaves during the winter or Rosa Rugosa which will have a lovely scent, flowers and hips

Im Pretty certain it's Leylandi, will look into a beech hedge thank you

I agree with PeterChichester.
The hedge/trees will survive, but as they grow outward the greenery 'inside' that was overtaken dies to brown and wont return. New growth will/is occurring in other places, but the hedge wont look pretty for a long long time (if ever again). The trick is to keep cutting them back a couple of times a year by a few inches so preventing the green from advancing.
Does a beech hedge retain its leaves through winter? I thought they die brown and fall (albeit after a lot of winter persuasion).

Yes, you could get Yew, Cotoneaster franchetii, Ligustrum ovalifolium (privet) etc, much better. The first two are evergreen.
