Can we learn anything from our history?

The only thing we learn from history is the fact that we never learn from history.
Adolf hitler wasn't as bad as he is made out to be, what about joe stalin.

Even spielbergs much acclaimed "historically accurate" saving private ryan is one sided (was there anyone else apart from the yanks involve??) and either inaccurate or plain wrong in some instances.

I thought everybody knew that the Yanks won the war and 'saved our asses'!

We, of course, were just sitting drinking cups of tea.

No hitler lost WW2 by opening up the eastern front. Yanks simply used the war as a cynical method of making money and breaking up the british empire.

Yes, the Americans did pretty well out of the war, at least economically, whilst Europe - both sides - finished the war a lot poorer than they started it.

I don't think the war accounts for our loss of empire, though. Like the Roman Empire, it had grown too big to last for ever. The Soviet 'empire' was the same. No empire has ever lasted indefinitely.

Btw, it looks as if we've had a Joe-free day today.

Or am I tempting fate?

Oh I totally agree our empire would have failed anyway, but the US most definitely capitalised on hastening its demise. Whilst I will never take anything away from the brave servicemen from the states, many of whom paid the ultimate price on foreign soil, the motives of the US government were pretty disgraceful.

Zimbabwe are still suffering from the hundred years of oppression of the indigenous population by UK and Dutch settlers.

That has to be one of the most stupid comments I have ever seen on this forum. Zimbabwe is suffering from Robert Mugabe.

Oh no. Zimbabwe is suffering because of white people. Mr Mugabe jolly fine chap! :D

Yes, and what makes it worse is that Mugabe is a Yorkshireman, I'm embarrassed to say.
The proof is there: say his name backwards!
