Can you tank normal plasterboard before tiling?

Or do you have to use moisture resistant plasterboard only?

Tanking plasterboard is good practice if tiles are likely to come into contact with water, e.g. in a shower or over a bath. Moisture resistant plasterboard doesn't have to be used.
