Can't open back door!

Hi guys. We have a double glazed UPVC back door in the kitchen. When we unlock it, the handle won't go down, so we can't open it.
There are two bars that go across from the door into the door frame, one in the top half and one in the bottom half of the door. These still stay in that position.
When it's unlocked, the bar goes back into the door at the handle position, but the handle itself won't go down. It still "feels" as if its locked, even though it isn't.
Has the lock broken?
Or have I missed something?

It will be the lock mechanism broke where the bar goes between the handles

yeah sounds like where the spindle passes through the square hole which opereates the mechanism will have broken, pretty much stuck really, new door? unless you can get it open and get a new mechanism
