Took the tap apart to fix a leak which I suspect now are the O-Rings
and I cannot refit the spout piece that swivels. It goes down so far and that's it... it should seat right on the bottom - or used too !

I'm reluctant to apply absolute brute force.... but see no other way.
Any advice appreciated

Silicone grease usually helps. Your new seal will be tighter than the old one so it will need a bit more force to get in than the old one took to get out.
Just make sure it's in the right place and try to push down 'squarely' so you don't rip a slice off the new o ring.

Check the grub screw that you loosened to get it out doesn't need to be loosened a little more and that there are no ridges or notches that need to be lined up, either on the spot or in the tap body before it will go in properly.
