Capping off a chimney

We are going to have our fireplace and front of chimney breast removed to put a range cooker in.

Part of the estimate for the building says that 'assuming the chimney is capped off'.

The fireplace currently runs a gas fire. How will I know if the chimney is capped off? What trade will do this if not? (builder, chimney sweep). I have also heard it is a good idea to get the chimney swept before such work, is this true?

Many thanks

if it was capped you might have noticed it when the fire was on
ie you'd be dead

roofer or builder will cap it
yes its a good idea to get it swept before its capped off

Don't you mean someone else would notice they were dead? Mind you, there was a case last year when a Civil Servant died at his desk and I think it took 3 days for someone to notice. Some people aren't very lively at the best of times.

Fair point. :)

So capping off means sealing the chimney completely. I wasn't sure.
