i didn't explain very well but there are two tall pipes an inlet air breather and an outlet breather pipe both above roof level one to and the other from septic tank - both pipes have caps on them due birds etc and we heard that you could get carbon filter caps which obviously help get rid of any excess smell
we are using bio friendly granules in the tank and from what we can see the tank itself is working away fine
the filters we've heard should be about £25/30 each but only one i can find is about £70 plus each or more expensive from canada or usa
The tank is in France . Over here there might be a low level air inlet and a high soil/vent pipe - but in UK we don`t put filters on them Is it a bad egg smell - could be hydrogen sulphide from the " wrong" bacteria in the tank - you`d need to Google around this - it`s a phenomena I`ve heard of once
I think if the pipes are above roof height and you are using a digester compound such as Eparcyl in your fosse any smell should be minimal......
is there a pong?
John
we use eparcyl and we also have OE42 from oasis - the smell is not overpowering and wouldn't call it a sulphur smell like rotten eggs - it's just you can smell it just slightly in the air in the morning at that end of house and near the tank openings although they are obviously covered with the concrete tops during rest of day - depends on weather
we've had septic tanks for years in scotland and never had this problem expecially after we started using OE42 but our septic tank there only had a breather tube etc before entrance to tank then to soakaway
when we bought this house french owner emptied tank prior to us getting it and we started it off normally and even bunged in the proverbial rabbit to help - we had to put in breather pipes as he didn't have these and separate surface water as one does here of course when house was 'certificated' prior to purchase this was pointed out that it had to be done
