carbon monoxide alarm

could someone tell me why it should be 1.5 metres high that you position the alarm ?

surely it should be just above the skirting board ?

will it not kill kids / animals

If i recall correctly its because carbon monoxide has a similar density to air, if it was alot heavier then low would be best, and if a lot lighter then high. But im sure its very very similar so middle of the room.
