Hi, can anyone advise me on this please, I have just bought a large cast iron rad and I want to fit a electric element in it ( like a heated towel rail one) is this possible and can I buy reducing bushes as the rad is fitted with large fittings, what size would I need to reduce down to in order to fit the element in. Any advice would be appreciated, Dave

What size ? bushes yes and it would take forever to use electric on cast Iron

The rad is 1750mm long, 400mm high and 190mm wide, the female nut on both ends of the rad are 32mm internal size with a 30mm flanged pipe inside to connect to . I would also need to blank one off as well, what size reducer and blank cap would I need? I know it would take a while to heat up but once it reached temp would it should stay there shouldn't it?

Thats gonna cost you in electric

from what you say I 1 1/4 is 32 and 30mm maybe 1" without seeing it its difficult

What you using inside rad ? to transfer heat ?

And in the event that it managed to heat, with plugged connections, and nowhere for the excess pressure to go, it would probably EXPLODE!!

Probably one of the most ridiculous ideas I have heared!!!

Remember those little electric elements for towel rails depend on the isolating valves being open to a heating system with provision for expansion of heated water, your "scheme" does not! ;)

Water? What would you recommend. Just looked on tape measure 32 mm is 1" 1/4 and 30mm is 1" 3/8. How are the new bushes measured? Internally or externally?

BOILERMAN2" what about heated towel rails that are electric only then? And you can buy cast iron radiators with electric elements in, how do they work then? As for it being a riddiculas idea , that is why I've asked on here for advice, I'm not a plumber so I don't have all the answers.

Ive not seen a cast rad with an electric element in mate, would you post a link please?

There are loads of companies selling them, just type in "electric cast iron radiators" and take your pick

If you still think it's the most ridiculous idea you've heard off maybe you should inform all these companies as well. I considered buying one online but then thought it would be cheaper to make one myself . Only paid £10 for the rad from my local hospital and it's never been painted so is virtually mint. Won't be to much to convert I wouldn't think

Do u think it really is silly to do it then? If so how do these companies get away with it, they must have to meet a british standard of some sort

Well done - the penny drops....... They have to be made to BS/EN Standards for safety & performance They ususally contain a specialist OIL rather than water, which if you remember school science lessons, CANNOT BE COMPRESSED, so if you seal your Hospital Rad , fill it with Water, then heat it with your Electric element, BANG!! and you'll probably end up in the Hospital from which your now shattered Radiator came from in the first place ;)

Can I buy this specialist oil, I could leave the bleed nipple open a touch to allow air to escape :D only joking
