What's the best way to attach a 4" x 2" timber on top of a catnic so can then build a stud wall above, thanks for your time.

Well if no-one else is interested!
I can't think of the situation you are using it in and depending on the section of the catnic you could shot fire it, drill and bolt it or not bother with anything if the sole plate is adequately secured at ends clear of the catnic. I would probably bolt it for peace of mind as I don't have access to even consider a shot firing. Oh I forgot if you can't bolt it you could still drill and fix using a self tapper (pilot drill first though)
