Use a wet finger to smooth across tha caulk after you have run it along the gap. Use a damp cloth to get it off your fingers after. Must be done when the caulk is wet .
if caulking up small gaps as in skirts to wall etc, first make sure you only cut a small nozzle so to limit the amout of caulk coming out so to do nice and neat then use wet finger,if you need to gun alot in because the gaps are large (a) use a damp, not wet, sponge to wipe off excess and let dry.you may need to apply a 2nd bead of caulk as it can and will sink and crack.
