we often buy bulk loads of ballast (sand 'n' gravel mixed) and mix our own concrete, as any we have left over will do the slab and fill the cavities
.

Nose i saw this remark you had put on another message, am i right in thinking here Nose that you fill the cavity up to just short of DPC level with concrete ???

we now fill cavities to within 225mm of the dpc. this usually translates to 3 metric courses of bricks below dpc.

when i first started it was only 150mm or two courses.

incidentally, cavities are filled prior to back-filling and compacting in order to prevent the walls pushing in.

a lean mix is all that is required, usually about 7 or 8 ballast to 1 cement.

225mm is compliant with current reg's.

why?

don't tell me you have filled right up to dpc?

No m8 i havnt filled it at all at the moment, but its only 250mm from my footings to the DPC so i guess i cant fill it any more.

finished a job an hour ago.

no point in starting anything big, may as well go and play golf!
