Hi, turned water off at stop cock before heading to Cornwall for two weeks. Came back to find part of ceiling down and sofa, carpets etc. soaking. Any ideas how this could happen with water turned off? Appears to be a sudden, one-off build that went 'whoosh'.
Hope someone can through light on this.

What type of system do you have?
If cold water storage, although water turned off, if not drained down, you still have water in system. Also be true of heating system, if not isolated and drained down still full of water.
If sealed system, still will have water in CH system.
Other thing is, does your stop tap work?

Don't have storage tank. Similar thing happened a while back when changing tap. Water turned off downstairs, had to head to B&Q for stuff and came back to water spewing out of pipe which had had been dry as a bone for at least an hour before I left.

Either that or you turned the water off and 50 illegals couldn't take a leak

Thanks for the last two "helpful" comments. If I were a plumber I wouldn't be seeking help here, would I?

Sorry Joe800 but one has to apply lateral thinking as well.

If, you turned the water off, where did the flood come from, it can't be difficult to trace and would likely be a permanent problem.

The Cold storage tank and the cylinder being the only internal store that can leak.

Outside of that it is down to weather and neighbours/friends playing silly buggers and turning the water back on.
