hi

i'd like to know the best possible way to re-wire my ceiling light into a floor lamp. i have a large arco style floor lamp for my main light and would like to use it with the dimmer switch on the wall.

would it be fine to run cable from the ceiling rose down to a fuse box near the floor?

what is the best solution for this?

thanks in advance

Is it suitable for dimming?

Why do you think you need a "fuse box" (I assume you mean fused connection unit)?

What do you plan to do with the ceiling light? If you are going to leave it there the best solution would be:

1) Replace the existing switch with a 2-gang one, putting the ceiling light on one gang.

2) Run a new cable with N/E & permanent live to the switch, live into the other gang, N & E to choc-block.

3) Run a new cable from the switch with N/E & switched live to a 5A round-pin socket.

4) Put a 5A round-pin plug on the floor lamp.

Remember that there are rules for where buried cables can be and any new cabling you install should be RCD protected.
