Can anyone help with this wiring. There is a wire left over and when the fuse is switched back on the light stays on all the time, so the switch no longer works.

There doesn't seem to be another place to put the last wire - can anyone tell me how it should be wired?

Looks like you have terminated the neutral with the earth, so that needs sorting out first. The earth should be connected to an earth terminal or in it's own connector if the fitting is not metallic.

How was your previous switch wire?
What conductor/conductors are left over?
Are you sure switch is not faulty?
Have your got permanently live and switch live connected together in same terminal?
Do all lights on that switch come on when switch is off?

The fitting is not metallic - the ceiling light is from Ikea and they never seem to have an earth.

The light that was installed before worked fine but i completely forgot to note how it was wired. Yes the light stays on regardless of what i do with the switch.

The wire that is left over is a red wire but no idea where i can put this as i am limited as there don't seem to be enough places to put wires. Sorry - bit of an amateur so i'm not sure the correct terminology.

I am not sure what I am looking at. I cannot see a spare wire in your picture.

Coming out of the ceiling you have what?

Is it two cables one with black and red and a second cable with two reds?

I am ignoring the two earth conductors that (per the above) must be removed and connected together in a separate bit of terminal block.

Please advise & maybe can help you more….

That does not mean you can bang the earth in regardless, they need to be terminated together and if the fitting is class II and does not require or have an earth terminal, it should be placed in a separate connector, definitely not in with the neutral!

Schoolboy error!

so you have perm live in at the light terminal.
You need a test meter that can test continuity and live voltage.
As already mentioned, the earth should terminated together but not across the neutral or live terminals shown in picture.
The neutral black stays in neutral terminal and then you say you have three red cores, this will likely be permanent live (this is the feed/supply live) then a switch line that will feed the live to the switch and is connected together with the perm live this is in separate connector not at the live terminal of the light, this is for the red that returns from the switch and that will create your lighting circuit and you should then have a functional switch.

As above you need a couple of spare terminal connectors (one for earth and one for live loop), Ikea and many other suppliers fail to include these and often fail to give correct instructions on the methods used to create a switch function.
If you have two pair of twin and earths and one set has a red and black core plus earth and the seconds set has a pair of reds plus earth. I would edge my bets that the red pair go to and from the switch and the red and black pair are perm live and neutral, but I would always test out and not take this for granted, but a look inside the switch plate may offer clues!

As regulars here know, I am all for have-a-go DIY'ers.

I am retired now, but at the grand old age of 48, it is not often I have seen such incompetence as I have seen here. It is quite obvious that the wires coloured green and black have different functions.

SO WHY PUT THEM IN THE SAME TERMINAL???

Surely you realised that was wrong???

Seriously, OP, you are on the path to killing someone in your house with your ignorance.

If you can't work out which cable is which then you need to get in a pro right away. Seriously.

You seem to be missing a wire. I see 2x bare copper, 2x red and 1x black. Is there another black wire in there somewhere?

Also, do my eyes deceive me or is that 4mm2 cable?
