Ceiling lights

I'm not in agreement by the way that this space could be adequately lit by a 60w bulb either, 20K kitchen refit finished off with a £1.50 lighting upgrade, the jury's out on that idea.
And you aren't going to be able to do any sensible decision making if you start with the attitude that the only alternative to filling your ceiling with 2" torches is a bare bulb hanging down on a length of flex.

If you're worried about disproportionality of spend, you could if you wanted spend twice what the kitchen cost on a single light fitting.

OK - it wouldn't be suitable for a kitchen, and it would be more than 60W, but I'm just trying to make the point that the alternative to little downlighters is not only this:

Ok, whats the middle ground, not interested in fluffing up the lighting in this kitchen, the facts are:-

1] 5m x 5m space
2] will have dark gloss worktops, light coloured walls and floor
3] ceiling to floor height is only 2280mm so no chandeliers possible.
4] need to focus lighting in areas such as sink etc.
5] all ceiling boards down so all wiring work possible.
6] prefer rooms to be bright not just light enough, bathroom has 6 of 50w downlighters, lounge has 160w of normal bulbs in total etc etc.

Open to any ideas, but wife has had enough of the existing 6ft strip light.
