1) The wattage of the existing ceiling light is: __________

2) The total wattage of the 5 spotlights will be: __________

3) This change is:
a) a good thing
b) a bad thing

4) Spotlights are called spotlights because
a) They produce spots of light
b) They only illuminate spots
c) They are no good at providing whole room illumination
d) All of the above

current light is standard light fitting 240w new spots 50 w each. is it best to come off the main with a junction box to each one, or wire them like a daisy chain.

Neither - the best thing is to twig that replacing a single light, max 100W, with 250W of inefficient lighting is a very bad idea, and forget the whole idea of fitting them.

LEDs are coming along nicely, but forget 5, you'll need 10. But this will be maximum 30 watts if you need 10.

Iv seen loads of bathrooms with downlights, very bright aswell.why are they such a bad idea to fit.?

They are not designed to provide room illumination.

They are designed to produce narrow beams of light to highlight individual features or items - they were produced originally for the retail display market.

Some people, you for example, call them spotlights, which gives you a clue.

Next time you see one of those bathrooms, count how many there are, and think how bright the room would be with the same number of standard light fittings.

Take the room you're planning to fit them in. How well do you think it would be lit if you just put 2 of them in?

Are you planning to put them in a bathroom? If so are you aware the the work is notifiable, and that you might have problems getting approval because of the Part L contravention they represent? And what's above the bathroom? If it's a loft or flat roof then you'll create a 2nd Part L infringement by clearing away the insulation and a Part C one by providing a route for moist air to get up there, unless you put a sealed enclosure over them and re-instate the insulation, which will probably mean getting some more of it.

A lot of aggro to install lighting which doesn't work as well as what you're taking out...

What do you mean by "wet zone"?

“special location” means a location within the limits of the relevant zones specified for a bath,
a shower, a swimming or paddling pool or a hot air sauna in the Wiring Regulations, sixteenth
edition, published by the Institution of Electrical Engineers and the British Standards
Institution as BS 7671: 2001 and incorporating amendments 1 and 2.
