Ex pub being converted into house. There is a 2 part cellar chillar with one unit in the cellar and the fan whatever unit on the roof. I need to remove it but was warned to watch out as its is highly pressurized. It has been off and sat there off for 6 years doing nothing.

Is this thing ok just to rip out ?

Refridgeration units are indeed pressurised with gas which is known to be hazardous to the atmosphere......if the gas is still in there it should be removed by a specialist.
However, if its just sitting there with cut pipes and so on, there's no problem with you removing it.
John :)

I believe deliberately releasing refrigerant gases to atmosphere is actually highly illegal! Apart from the fact it could asphyxiate you under certain circumstances....

You really need to engage a refrigeration engineer to remove the gas, and render the installation safe to dismantle.

After spending an hour this morning in a queue with another 100 cars all stuck behind a recycling bin truck going house to house, I am beginning to wonder if Environmental protection and ozone friendly are purely words we banter around to make us feel good.

I am sure you are right about releasing the gases so I will seek the advice of a competent engineer.

Brian, I spent many years myself working in the 'recycling' industry, including several for a local council contractor. Thousands is spent, (wasted) on box ticking exercises, many gallons of fuel are burnt collecting a few tonnes of stuff that would otherwise have gone to landfill.

We had new 'state of the art' dustcarts with separate sections for collecting different materials in one go, apart from breaking down frequently, they also only managed about 2 m.p.g., a third of that of the vehicles they replaced..... However, this all helps to meet the targets set for us by Brussels.....

My main concern was the gas was released safely, unfortunately although I am sure you are competent, you never know if someone is going to cut through those pipes in the cellar, thus filling the space with the gas and possibly killing themselves in the process.....

After getting a price for someone to come and safely decommission and dispose I have 2 other solutions.

1: Sell it and buyer dismantles/collect

2: Skip under roofline, unbolt unit, push off roof, run, go to another pub for lunch whilst the dust settles, take to recycling centre.....

It'll be the condenser in the cellar. Check the data badge on either unit & it'll state the gas type. The gas should be 'recovered' by a Fridge Engineer that holds an F Gas qualification. It shouldn't cost a fortune to do.

Phone a few Refrigeration Engineers local to you & get a price. You never know there maybe a second hand market for the units if they're not cheap sh.t.

Thanks to all who commented/helped, now sorted. Sold it on Ebay and the guy who bought it is an F Gas fitter. Tested and removed this morning and cash in my pocket...Result
